About “Pookal Pookum Tharunam” Song

Madharasapattinam (2010) is a historical romance movie set in 1947 Madras just before India’s independence, capturing a forbidden love story between a local washerman, played by Arya, and the British Governor’s daughter, played by Amy Jackson. Soundtrack composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar featuring poetic lyrics by the late Na. Muthukumar and brought to life through the distinct vocals of Harini, Andrea Jeremiah, and G. V. Prakash Kumar.

The poem traces a love that defies language and logic, moving from wonder to surrender. Two voices circle each other, each confessing how the beloved has transformed an empty world into abundance without force or warning. They share a fear of time’s passage yet find refuge in the present moment, where silence speaks louder than words. The man marvels at a garden blooming in a heart that knew no rain; the woman yields without battle. Together they arrive at a wordless bond that outlasts roads, birds, and falling leaves—a mystery neither can explain nor time dissolve.

He:

When flowers bloom in gentle grace,
Beloved, no one has seen that sacred space.

She:

The moon lingers still in morning’s golden doorway,
Unwilling to surrender love to the waking day.

He:

Yesterday, the hours dragged like an endless, hollow song,
Yet by your side, even forever feels too short, too long.

She:

Not a single word is spoken, yet why does today feel so new?
Nothing else will stay in my heart, except this feeling born of you.

He:

The night holds its breath, and the dawn dares not appear,
And should day break at all, my love won’t fade — oh, my flower dear.

He:

Let silence be our voice for all the years we live,
My beloved’s eyes shall speak what words love has to give.

She:

Let yesterday fade and tomorrow find its own way,
All I have ever needed lives and breathes in today.

He:

No root, no seed, no rain has ever graced this heart of mine,
Yet look — a garden grows within, with flowers sweet and divine.

She:

Without a sword, without a battle, without the wound of war,
What spell is this, that you conquer all of me without a scar?

He:

This trembling hesitation that fills my heart so deep,
Where will it lead me at last, and where will it ask me to keep?

She:

Where shall I seek the words to make this mystery clear?
If you should find them, come and whisper them into my ear.

He:

What wandering cloud has found my door and chosen to linger here,
Showering its tender, silver rain upon my heart today?

She:

What bond is this, that I cannot understand its art,
It only grows and stretches on, entwining deeper in my heart.

He:

Without a name, without a word, not knowing who she be,
A bond for life has quietly grown between her heart and me.

She:

Without a reason, without a pause, no warning could forestall,
Wherever your footsteps wander, my heart finds its way through all.

He:

Though every road must reach its end and fade into the night,
The soul’s own journey never stills, forever bound to flight.

She:

Though the bird has soared beyond the sky’s last blue,
My gaze still lingers where its wings once flew.

She & He:

The dance the falling leaves began still turns without an end,
What strange and wordless feeling is this, that even time can’t bend?
