About “Ponvaanam Panneer Thoovuthu” Song
“Ponvaanam Panneer Thoovuthu” is a melodious Tamil song from the 1983 film Indru Nee Naalai Naan, directed by Major Sundarrajan. Composed by the legendary Ilaiyaraaja with lyrics penned by Vairamuthu, the song is soulfully rendered by S. Janaki. The film stars Sivakumar and Lakshmi in the lead roles, with Jaishankar and Sulakshana appearing in supporting roles.
The poem is a lush, romantic meditation on love’s awakening, rendered through celestial and natural imagery. IT passes through longing and desire, rising passion, merging nature, sensuality, and divine blessing into one vision of union.
The golden heavens shower petals’ grace —
My thoughts spill softly, colours shift within your gaze.
The rain comes pouring down, in search of shelter deep,
Arrows of blossoms pierce the soul through life itself.
The heavens swell to let the sweet rain fall,
While deep within, the milky rivers boil with desire.
Is this the hour for love’s sweet ache,
When hearts at Cupid’s altar pray?
Will these two fireflies find their flame,
And weave their light to make the night glow?
Once the golden lotus opens wide, will it fold its petals in?
Will the silken flower-vine seek a gentle place to fall?
Do not the flower arrows take flight,
Nor sweet urns spill their golden wine?
This white jasmine blossom that falls before my eyes —
Is it a heavenly maiden’s gift from paradise?
In Cupid’s rain-drenched forest,
Love comes pouring through the valleys!
மது குடம் சாயாதோ…!
