About “Swasame Swasame” Song
A. R. Rahman composed “Swasame Swasame” for the film Thenali in 2000. S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and Sadhana Sargam sang the duet. In the lyrics, Pa. Vijay uses metaphors from science and nature to describe love as breath. Rahman built the arrangement with woodwinds and vocals to convey a feeling of breeze.
The poem captures a profound emotional evolution—from cosmic loneliness to transformative union. It maps the journey from barrenness to fertile flooding, from dark isolation to radiant wholeness. Each metaphor speaks of surrender and awakening, where love arrives as a “seventh sense,” turning grounded hearts into “flying saucers.” The dialogue rings with yearning and awe, framing love not as a mere feeling but as a force of nature—atomic, orbital, elemental—that breathes life, turns night to dawn, and makes two souls each other’s “very breath.”
She:
What words are left to speak of me,
When love has swept me off my feet?
So softly, my heart has surrendered—
It tumbles gently into your hands.
O My very breath, Breath of my life…
He:
Come to me as the breeze at the windowpane,
Come to me as a flower sewn in golden rain,
Come to me as the shower born of lightning’s flame,
Come to me as the breath my soul can claim.
O Fragrance, O Fragrance of my life…
How do I name the world you’ve made?
As my eyes drift into yours,
Wings begin to softly bloom within.
She:
With your left eye, you taught a gentle word;
With your right eye, a storm of wars stirred.
He:
I was born with six senses to hold the world,
Then Love arrived—a seventh, transcendent and immense.
It stirred within me like a dawn unknown,
A seventh sense that made your presence my own.
She:
I was a drift in the dark, lost and unbound,
Until you pulled me close—now I orbit, spun.
He:
One glance, atomic, split my endless night—
And breathed into my soul a sudden light.
My heart was a record, stuck on a spinning floor—
Till you lifted it skyward—a flying saucer unbound.
She:
I was desert sand, dry and riverless, alone,
Then you flooded through me—majestic Nile, my own.
He:
I was Mercury, dark and lone, without a moon,
Then you came—my radiant full, my light, my tune.
She:
I found you, and my long night turned to dawn.
O My very breath, Breath of my life…
